ASTM D5511 is a laboratory method for measuring anaerobic biodegradation of plastic materials under high-solids digestion conditions. A result applies only to the sample identified in the report and the stated test conditions.

It is not, by itself, proof that a finished consumer product is home-compostable, industrially compostable, accepted by curbside recycling, or able to break down within a particular time after customary disposal. A report for an additive, pellet, film, or another polymer should not be presented as a finished EVA play-mat result.

What is bio-based EVA foam, and does it break down after disposal?

“Bio-based” describes where some of the raw material came from (a plant-derived feedstock instead of a fossil one). It says nothing about what happens to the product after disposal, so “bio-based” and “breaks down after disposal” are separate claims that each need their own evidence. Does foam break down in general?

Do not assume so. Common plastic foams, EVA included, should be treated as not biodegradable under ordinary disposal unless evidence covers the exact finished product and the conditions it will actually end up in.
