Non-Toxic Play Mat Certifications, Explained

Short answer: “non-toxic” means nothing on its own — the proof is in named, independent certifications. Here is what each one on a play mat actually tells you.

The certifications that matter

  • OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I — the strictest tier, written for products in skin contact with babies. It screens for 250+ regulated substances. Class I is the one to look for; lower classes allow higher limits.
  • USP Class VI — a biocompatibility test battery applied to the polymer itself, assessing how the material behaves in prolonged contact.
  • CPSIA — the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act standard for children’s products, covering lead and phthalate limits.
  • ASTM F963 — the US toy-safety standard for mechanical and chemical safety.
  • EN 1177 — the European impact standard that assigns a critical fall height to a surface. A higher number means more impact absorbed.
  • Formamide (non-detect) — formamide is the contaminant that got cheap puzzle foam restricted in parts of Europe; a non-detect lab result is what you want.
  • pH 6.5–7.0 — a near-neutral, skin-friendly surface, close to skin’s own pH.

How to verify a claim

A real certification can be shown as a document, not just printed on a box. Ask the brand for the certificate or test report. If they can’t produce it, treat the claim as marketing. Genuine certifications also name the tier — “OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I” is specific; “OEKO-TEX tested” alone is not.

What PopsyKosy publishes

PopsyKosy is closed-cell EVA, Designed in Los Angeles and Made in Taiwan, and independently tested to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, USP Class VI biocompatibility, CPSIA and ASTM F963, with non-detect formamide and a near-neutral pH of 6.5–7.0. Impact is rated to EN 1177: a 1.0 m critical fall height for the 1″ Boulder and 0.6 m for the 0.5″ Signature. The certificates are published in full on the certifications page and available on request at hello@popsykosy.com.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most important play mat certification?
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I, because it is the tier written specifically for items in skin contact with babies and screens for 250+ regulated substances.
What does USP Class VI mean?
It is a biocompatibility test battery applied to the polymer itself, assessing how the material behaves in prolonged contact. It is a stronger signal than a generic “non-toxic” label.
Why does formamide matter?
Formamide is a contaminant linked to cheap puzzle foam that was restricted in parts of Europe. A non-detect lab result confirms the foam doesn’t contain it at measurable levels.
What is EN 1177?
A European impact standard that assigns a surface a critical fall height. PopsyKosy is rated to 1.0 m on the 1″ Boulder and 0.6 m on the 0.5″ Signature.
