Floor Mat to Put Under a Baby Playpen
Most playpens have a thin fabric or plastic floor that does little to soften a fall onto hardwood — putting a cushioned foam mat underneath fixes that and protects your floor from the playpen's feet at the same time.
Why the playpen's own floor is not enough
Playpen bases are designed to fold and travel, not to cushion. Once a baby is pulling up and bonking down inside the pen, the floor underneath matters. A foam mat sized to the playpen's footprint adds real give under that thin base.
Sizing to the footprint
Measure the outside dimensions of your playpen and choose a mat that covers it fully, with a little margin so the pen's feet sit on foam rather than half-on, half-off. A 4×6 ft mat fits most square and round pens; for a larger play yard, size up or set custom dimensions with Build Your Floor.
Thickness
For a pull-up-stage baby inside a pen, the 1" Boulder gives the most cushion under the thin base. If you mainly want floor protection and light padding, the 0.5" Signature is enough.
Clean and safe
The closed-cell EVA wipes clean — handy under a pen where snacks and drinks land — with no printed-film top layer and no seams. It is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I certified across the whole product, with USP Class VI biocompatibility on the core and a neutral pH of 6.5–7.0.
FAQ
Will a mat make the playpen slide around?
A heavy foam mat actually adds grip under most playpen feet. If your pen is very lightweight, check that it still sits stable once loaded with your baby's weight.
What thickness should go under a playpen?
Choose 1" if your baby is pulling up and falling inside the pen; 0.5" is fine for younger babies or for floor protection alone.
Does the mat need to be bigger than the playpen?
Slightly. A small margin ensures all the pen's feet rest on foam and gives a soft edge if a toddler reaches out of the pen.
