Is EVA foam safe for babies?

Yes, when it's verified. Two mats can both say "EVA" and be completely different — one virgin and tested, one mostly recycled PE of unknown origin. What is formamide, and why does it matter?

The 4-point safety checklist (works for any brand)

Before you buy any play mat, ask for:

• Virgin EVA, not recycled PE — recycled is where contaminants ride in.
• Formamide tested non-detect — and ask to see the report.
• OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I (Annex 6) — the infant tier, not a vague badge.
• USP Class VI biocompatibility on the material.

If a brand can't show the reports for these, that's your answer.

EVA vs recycled PE foam
