Tummy Time Mat for Hardwood Floors
Bare hardwood is too firm for tummy time, and a thin blanket does not fix it. For a newborn pressing up on their forearms, you want a continuous cushioned surface that softens the floor, stays put, and wipes clean after the inevitable spit-up. A closed-cell foam play mat is the simplest answer: it gives gentle give underfoot without being so squishy that a baby sinks in.
Why hardwood needs a dedicated mat
Hardwood reflects every bit of pressure straight back into your baby's elbows, knees and the side of their head when they tip. It is also cold, which shortens how long a baby will tolerate being on their belly. A foam mat insulates against that cold and turns a two-minute protest into a ten-minute session.
How to choose the cushioning
For tummy time specifically, our 0.5" Signature mats are usually plenty — they take the edge off hardwood while keeping a stable, level surface a baby can prop against. If your floor is over a basement or you want the same mat to carry into the crawling and cruising months, step up to the 1" Boulder line for extra fall absorption.
Size matters more than parents expect. A 4×6 ft mat is a fine starter footprint for a single tummy-time station; a 6×8 ft gives room for a parent to lie down face-to-face, which is the single best way to keep a baby engaged.
Cleaning and safety
Our mats are closed-cell EVA with no printed-film top layer to peel and no zip-cover seams to trap milk — you wipe the whole surface with a damp cloth. The material carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I certification (the strictest tier, for items in direct contact with babies) and USP Class VI biocompatibility on the foam core, with a skin-neutral pH of 6.5–7.0.

FAQ
Can I just use a play gym mat for tummy time on hardwood?
The small quilted mats that come with play gyms are thin and slide on hardwood. A dedicated foam mat gives more cushion and stays put, which matters once your baby starts pushing against it.
How thick should a tummy time mat be on hardwood?
0.5" is comfortable for early tummy time. Choose 1" if you want the same mat to cover crawling and first steps, or if the room sits above an unheated space.
Is foam safe for a newborn's face?
Look for whole-product OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I and a neutral pH. Our mats meet both and have no printed film on top, so there is nothing to flake off near a baby's mouth.
