Many competitor mats (Toddlekind, Skip Hop, generic Amazon brands) ship as interlocking foam tiles — typically 4 or 9 puzzle pieces. The seams between tiles are the dirty secret of tile mats: they accumulate spilled milk, food crumbs, dust mites, and (over months) mould and bacteria invisible to surface wipe-downs. Lab studies of used tile mats consistently find elevated colony-forming-unit (CFU) counts at the seam interface.
