PVC plays a useful role in pipes and electrical insulation but becomes problematic in soft-touch consumer goods. To make PVC pliable enough for a play mat or shower curtain, manufacturers add 30-40% by weight of phthalate plasticizers (DEHP being the historical workhorse). These plasticizers slowly migrate out of the polymer over time, ending up on hands, in dust, and in mouths.
EVA, by contrast, is structurally flexible — no plasticizer additives needed. Combined with its higher chemical purity ceiling (USP Class VI–tested EVA can clear USP Class VI; USP Class VI–tested PVC also exists but is rare and expensive), EVA is the safer choice for sustained child contact.
