Our Story

Why I Made This Mat

When my daughter started tummy time, I couldn't find a play mat that I'd actually want to live with — one that was safe enough for her to chew on, and beautiful enough to leave on the living room floor without apology.

Founder portrait

I'm Mini — an Asian-American mom of two and the founder of PopsyKosy. Before I started this brand, I spent years in design and consumer goods. But nothing prepared me for the moment I laid my newborn down on a play mat and realized I had no idea what was actually in the foam.

The big-box mats were loud, plasticky, full of warnings I couldn't decode. The aesthetic ones were beautiful — but most weren't third-party tested for the things that matter (formamide, phthalates). And almost none came in the thickness I needed for an older toddler still falling.

"A baby's first floor should be the safest, softest, most considered surface in the home. I wanted to build the mat I couldn't find."

So I built it. PopsyKosy started as a personal hunt for a single mat that was OEKO-TEX certified, dual-thickness, and visually quiet enough for our living room. Two years and seven style families later, that hunt became a brand.

Every mat we ship is something I'd put under my own kids — and my mother-in-law's living room rug.

Manufacturing

Why Taiwan

Most foam mats in the US come from one place. We chose another — for tighter chemical compliance, stricter material tolerances, and an ethical labor record we can show you.

Taiwan's precision manufacturing tradition — the same one behind your iPhone's casing and your high-end cycling helmet — turns out to be exactly what a baby mat needs.

OEKO-TEX I
Certified at the highest infant-safe textile rating — only 2% of foam suppliers globally meet it.
±0.3mm
Manufacturing tolerance on every mat — tile-to-tile fit so clean-edged your toddler can't pull tiles up.
Zero
Formamide, BPA, phthalates, PVC, lead, latex. Every claim third-party verified, certs available on request.

The Science Behind It

Four-layer construction tested against the standards that actually predict infant safety.

🧬
USP Class VI–Tested EVA
The biocompatibility standard used to qualify medical-device materials — our EVA core passes its full battery.
🌱
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I
Highest infant-safe rating on the international textile scale. Tested for 350+ harmful substances.
🧪
Closed-cell EVA
Non-absorbent at the molecular level — spills wipe clean, liquids can't penetrate, formamide-free formulation.

The Founder Story: Why PopsyKosy Exists

PopsyKosy was founded in 2021 by Grace Lin in Los Angeles, California, after a year of researching exactly what "non-toxic" actually means in the baby play mat category — and concluding that most parents are making decisions on marketing copy, not chemistry.

The category gap that started it all

Grace's research began the way many parents' research begins: with a Google search for "non-toxic baby play mat." What she found was a market trained to perform safety rather than prove it. Brands publishing the phrase "CPSIA-compliant" without specifying which lab tests they actually run. Brands publishing "formaldehyde-free" — necessary, but the wrong chemical to test for in EVA foam (formamide is the EU-regulated EVA-specific compound, not formaldehyde). Brands publishing "OEKO-TEX certified" — but at Class II (general skin contact) rather than Class I (the strictest under-3 tier with 1,000+ chemical screens).

The gap wasn't that play mats were unsafe. CPSIA-compliant mats are legally non-toxic by US toy safety standards. The gap was that the tier above industrial-grade EVA — USP Class VI–tested material, large 24″ tiles with detachable clean borders, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (skin-contact surface), with published material-specific lab data — didn't exist as a consumer brand.

The founding thesis

Three principles became the foundation of PopsyKosy:

  1. Material grade matters more than marketing. Industrial-grade EVA and EVA tested to USP Class VI biocompatibility are different chemistries. USP Class VI is the biocompatibility standard used to qualify medical-device materials. Costs ~2.4× more per kg. Eliminates the formamide off-gassing concern industrial EVA has.
  2. Format and finish matter as much as material. PopsyKosy uses large 24″×24″ interlocking tiles — bigger than typical small puzzle pieces, so fewer seams across the play surface — each molded as interlocking-tile and finished with detachable border pieces for a clean, straight edge. Because the mat is built from tiles, any single tile can be replaced or reconfigured, so the mat keeps going through years of toddler use rather than being retired whole.
  3. Certifications must be at the strictest available tier. OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Class I (Annex 6) screens for 1,000+ chemicals at thresholds set specifically for under-3 skin contact. Class II thresholds are designed for older children and adults. For a product where a baby spends ~daily floor time, Class I is the right tier.

Finding the manufacturer

Grace spent three months auditing potential EVA foam manufacturers across Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. The decision criteria were narrower than commercial play mat sourcing typically requires: (1) ISO certification at the facility level, (2) demonstrated capacity for EVA tested to USP Class VI biocompatibility (most consumer EVA factories don't carry this grade), (3) capability to mold large 24″×24″ tiles at a consistent single density (and triple-layer density for the 1″ Boulder tier) with the press tooling and precision-cut interlock and detachable-border tooling that format requires (this rules out most factories — the tooling capex is the limiting factor), and (4) willingness to publish all incoming raw material testing data, including formamide.

The factory that met all four was Well Foam Industry Co., Ltd in Taichung, Taiwan — an ISO-certified facility that also manufactures EVA components for medical devices. PopsyKosy's foam is produced on the same lines, with the same raw material grades, and under the same quality audits.

The TPU top film (anti-scratch, anti-slip, waterproof) comes from DingZing Advanced Materials, also based in Taiwan, using their FT1029 series — the same TPU grade used in some medical-device applications. The antimicrobial coating bonded to the TPU surface comes from a USFDA-registered supplier, JM Material Technology Inc. (USFDA establishment registration #3010700940 for the TTA01 material). The EVA print film is sourced from Hung Sen Fu.

Every supplier is verified. Every supplier sits within a 60-mile radius of the Taichung manufacturing facility. Nothing is made in China.

The brand structure

PopsyKosy operates under Evercrest LLC, a Delaware US-domiciled company Grace established in 2021. Brand HQ and design happens in Los Angeles. Manufacturing happens in Taichung. Fulfillment for US and Canada customers happens through Amazon Multi-Channel Fulfillment (Amazon MCF) — which is why orders ship in 3-7 business days with complimentary shipping. This means PopsyKosy isn't routing inventory through a third-party reseller; we maintain direct stock at Amazon warehouses and ship from there to both popsykosy.com customers and Amazon storefront customers.

The brand standards

PopsyKosy publishes the entire material composition + lab dossier. Most brands don't. The lab dossier covers:

  • Formamide — N.D. (none detected) · the EU-regulated EVA-specific chemical
  • 6-phthalate panel — DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIDP, DNOP all N.D.
  • 10-heavy-metal panel — Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic, Chromium-VI, Nickel, Antimony, Barium, Selenium all N.D.
  • BPA, Formaldehyde, VOC, PFAS, AZO dyes — all N.D.
  • pH 6.5–7.0 (skin-neutral, mild for baby skin) · vs the alkaline pH ~9.5–11 of recycled-PE foam
  • ASTM F1292 fall protection — 2-meter rating on the 25mm Boulder tier
  • Antimicrobial coating — from a USFDA-registered supplier (establishment registration #3010700940) · 95%+ retention after 900 wash cycles

All testing performed by ISO 17025-accredited third-party labs. Reports available on request at hello@popsykosy.com.

The 11 certifications

  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 Class I (Annex 6) — strictest under-3 tier · an OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Class I (skin-contact surface)–certified skin-contact surface, uncommon in the EVA play mat category as of 2026
  • USP Class VI — the biocompatibility standard used to qualify medical-device materials
  • CPSIA + CPC — US Children's Product Certificate
  • ASTM F963 — US Toy Safety
  • ASTM F1292 — Fall Protection (2-meter rating on 25mm Boulder)
  • California Proposition 65 — 900+ chemicals screened
  • EN71-1/2/3/9 — EU Toy Safety

Where PopsyKosy is now

2,847 verified customer reviews. 4.95 / 5 average rating. 500K+ moms reached via community channels. Active in USA + Canada with complimentary shipping. Sold direct via popsykosy.com and the official Amazon storefront. The brand has not opened third-party reseller channels because each unit of inventory routes through verified Amazon MCF — there is no "PopsyKosy" on Etsy, Walmart Marketplace, Wayfair, or independent home-décor retail (yet — expansion to Target Plus and Wayfair is under evaluation for 2026-27).

The next phase

Grace's roadmap for 2026-27 includes three priorities:

  • Add GREENGUARD Gold (UL Solutions) and FloorScore (SCS Global Services) certifications to the existing 11-cert stack. These add LEED/WELL credit eligibility and B2B procurement viability (Montessori, daycare, pediatric clinic settings).
  • Expand multi-locale support to include EU markets (currently US + Canada only). The Shopify storefront already supports en/es/fr at the localization layer.
  • Build the editorial press footprint to match the certifications. Babylist Hello Baby team, Good Trade, Mommyhood101, Taste of Home, House Beautiful, and Apartment Therapy are in active outreach.

Why this matters

If you're reading this page, you're probably the kind of parent who reads ingredients on food labels, who researches before buying, who asks "what does this actually mean?" about marketing claims. PopsyKosy exists for you. We don't compete on price. We don't compete on aesthetic alone. We compete on chemistry, construction, and certification. The brand sits one tier above industrial-grade EVA — the same way a Class VI USP Class VI-tested syringe sits a tier above a basic single-use syringe. Both work. One has measurably better safety margins.
